1.  Event Detection Discussion

  •  Issues with event-detection on surface moorings are very complicated due to types of fluid-flow near the surface
  • Much discussion on whether nitrate would be a better trigger for upwelling than temperature.  Chris P. was asked if she can provide old ISUS and array data to see correlations.  Yes she can.
  • We will develop this for a surface deployment; logic will be on the ESP but thresholds will be adjustable from shore.
  • We could also run this in 'test' mode, where it notifies shore that it should do something, and waits for instructions from humans.
  • ACTION:  We'll see how the data look to gain confidence we can get it to fire at the correct time. 

2.  D-ESP

  • D-ESP is now opened, unhooked from MARS simulator, and in the van.
  • Need to know what housing we will deploy with the mass spec.  Does it need different mounting brackes, etc.  Bill to look into by contacting Peter.
  • ISUS-- the two deep ISUS housing have arrived.  Doug will high-pressure test them the first 2 weeks of Feb.  We still need to get the high-pressure probes ordered (Jim will ping Luke)
  • Bill looked into turbidity issues at the 'Ashes' vent site.  Unlikely we will need a 'prefilter' on the wand, but there may be issues with wand length.  Must get requirements asap for any necessary development.
  • Calendar is attached to last week's Engineering mtg notes.

3.  Drifter comms

  • Brent has looked into Iridium phones and believes a solution exists to use these on Drifter (and an other mooring that needs to go Iridium).
  • We are moving forward on getting a loaner phone here to test before purchase.

4.  Spyglass

  • Although details are murky, Chris Melancon may have opportunity for contract work if anyone is interested.  This would consist of being a tech-support 'lifeline' for newly sold ESP units.  Please talk to Jim if you have any interest in this.

5.  WHOI

  • WHOI phone conference tomorrow at 11 to discuss EOM mooring design.  We will have a preliminary mtg today at 2 to discuss the issues before tomorrow's phone call.
  •  When we ship our mooring to WHOI, we will be using old DSP&L (orange) battery boxes (with alkalines), not the new tubes we are developing.

There is excellent, inverse correlation between T and NO3 in Mont Bay as Ken J and Luke C have shown.  This probably is most robust in the spring....
